MasterCard wins ruling in legal battle over card fees

Zitat

MasterCard said that the court had examined its interchange rates for the entire period of the claim. The judge had found that those rates were significantly below the lawful level of interchange that could have been charged to the retailers for those benefits, it added.

Stewarts Law, the law firm acting for the retailers, called Monday’s ruling “disappointing” and “surprising” given that the European Commission, the General Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union had all previously unanimously ruled that interchange fees were anti-competitive.

“We are reviewing the findings in detail with our clients and will be seeking leave to appeal,” it said.

The lawsuit is one of a number of legal claims which MasterCard is fighting.

In July, the Competition Appeal Tribunal ruled that MasterCard must pay £68.5m in damages to supermarket group J Sainsbury after losing a landmark competition case over interchange fees that it made on cards used by the retailer’s customers.

Other claims include a £14bn lawsuit which is being brought on behalf of up to 46m consumers for imposing card charges on consumers in what is set to be one of the UK’s first US-style class-action cases.

Mastercard charges forward

Mastercard's fourth-quarter results continued to show signs of ongoing growth. Revenue was up 9.5% to $2.76 billion, falling just short of the roughly 11% growth rate that most investors had wanted to see. Net income grew at a slower 5% pace to $933 million, but a decrease in outstanding share count helped boost earnings up to $0.86 per share. That was $0.01 per share better than the consensus forecast among investors.

Looking more closely at the numbers from Mastercard, one thing that stands out given the card company's recent history is that foreign exchange factors actually helped its bottom-line figures. Net income would only have been up 4% on a currency-neutral basis, and revenue suffered only a single-percentage-point headwind from the impact of translating foreign currencies back into U.S. dollars.

MasterCard Announces That Payments Can Now be Made on Blockchain

Zitat

Best of Both Worlds

Credit card companies are a long-standing pillar in the financial services sector. Credit cards were the first cashless payment option made available to the public and now, one of the leading financial services firms in the world has decided that it’s time for credit cards to get involved in blockchain technologies. On Friday, MasterCard announced that it’s opening up access to a blockchain-based business-to-business (B2B) payment service under a new option called the “MasterCard Blockchain API.”

Launched during the Money 20/20 Hackathon in Las Vegas this past weekend after testing and validation had been completed, this service is slated to become available to customers this week. “MasterCard’s blockchain solution provides a new way for consumers, businesses and banks to transact and is key to the company’s strategy to provide payment solutions that meet every need of financial institutions and their end-customers,” the company said in a press statement.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as MasterCard previously issued a blanket rejection of Bitcoin. Still, MasterCard’s blockchain service heralds what Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin described to be blockchain’s potential to replace credit cards. Instead of being taken over by blockchain technologies, however, MasterCard decided to embrace the movement.

Hey Toni, wärst du so nett und könntest mir den Graph erläutern? Was wird hier unter dem blended P/E verstanden? In schwarz ist der Kursverlauf widergegeben. Soweit so klar. Aber auf welcher Basis wird die P/E Ratio in blau berechnet? Und was ist der Unterschied zur orangenen Linie? Ich danke dir ganz herzlich. Thomas
