Mineralsand: Zirkon, Rutil, Ilmenit ..

Die Mineralien Zirkon (Zr[SiO4]), Rutil (TiO2) und Ilmenit (FeTiO3) kommen an einigen Orten in Sand vor. Diese Sandkörner sind sehr viel schwerer als gewöhnliche Quarzsandkörner und können physikalisch abgetrennt werden. Typische Beiprodukte sind Hafnium, Uran, Thorium, Yttrium, Cer und andere Metalle der Seltenen Erden.

Rutil wird für Schweißstabummantelungen und für die Herstellung von Titanweiß Pigment benötigt.

Zirkon wird als Pigment, Schleifmittel, Katalysator und für Spezial-glas/keramik benötigt. Z.B. für Ionenleitende  Solid State Elektrolyte. Zirkoniummetall ist sehr korrosionsbeständig (Zirkalloy) hat einen hohen Schmelzpunkt und reagiert kaum mit Neutronen (Kernbrennstabhülle). Nach einer Oversupply Phase wechselt der Markt jetzt zu Undersupply.
